ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Broken Ground Exhibition In Berlin and Prague has evolved with the energy from a number of individuals and organizations and they must be thanked.

The Canada Council’s Outreach Program provided initial support which enabled me to explore and develop exhibition possibilities for Broken Ground. The Department of Foreign Affairs, Arts and Cultural Industries, with its keen insight has provided foundational funding for the project. The National Archives of Canada has provided exhibition prints from its great collection of photographs. Those photographs present exceptional records and rich visual stories from Canada’s past. Hansgert Lambers, Associate Curator and Veranstalter in Berlin has been of great assistance in helping Broken Ground to exhibit at the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Mr. Lambers has also been of major assistance in helping to organize the exchange touring exhibition of Berlin photographers entitled Within and Beyond the Wall. Vanessa Ohlraun and Jean Fredette at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin have been of great assistance. Mia Sutnick in Toronto has given me words of wisdom. Klára Vomáková’s energy is responsible for Broken Ground’s fine venue at Galerie Vaclav Spala in Prague. The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery has been an important and conscientious partner in supporting the exhibition. Heidelberg Canada has kindly printed the exhibition materials for Broken Ground.

I thank with much appreciation the numerous other supporters of Broken Ground. The sum total of their contributions are part of Broken Ground’s success. Joanna Kubicki has designed the catalogue with much thought and understated finesse. Photographer and web designer Tony Makepeace has assembled the berlintoronto web site. Most importantly, I must thank the photographers whose outstanding work has been selected for this survey exhibition. Their work has disclosed a connection between soul, subject and existence in this vast and changing land.

Serge Clément, Rafael Goldchain, David Hlynsky, Thaddeus Holownia and Brenda Pelkey are exceptional individuals whose work is a gift to viewers who connect to the visions of the artists.
