Serge Clément Urban Notes - Quebec 1980-2000

..I walk, I photograph at the heart of the urban scene of an interior city... reflections on life, reflections on time.     I read Italo Calvino talking about  invisible cities like dreams constructed by desires and fears with false perspectives, absurd rules and secret thoughts, where everything is hidden.   I have always believed in photography as an exploration to better understand life and to better understand photography as an art in itself.  I have moved from descriptive to poetic images, from grayish to darker photographs.

I often see content revealed by light and observed from shadow detail; nothing is explained. Photography has a reality of its own; a moment lived poetically on the surface of paper. Urban Notes-Quebec is a selection of different projects from the last 20 years.   I experimented with photography in Montreal during the 1980's though sometimes escaping into rural scenes.  I was trying to find my path from commercial work in the solitude of the creative process. I work alone for weeks at a time, totally absorbed in ideas or thoughts found in reading. I usually returned to the same places tuned into my imagination. When I walk and photograph it is then that good images are created.
